November 27 2008: UYP founder Marie Carroll WINS Ireland Involved Award.

Maire Carroll, founder and director of Unlockyourpotential.ie was last night the winner of the Ireland Involved overall award for 2008 at a reception held in The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. In holding the first national annual award ceremony, Ireland InVOLved, Volunteering Ireland along with sponsor BHP Insurances, is shining a light on the phenomenal contribution made by ordinary people and the amazing impact they have on every aspect of Irish life through their volunteering activities.

Hundreds of volunteers were nominated , across ten categories and thirty people were short listed for the awards event. Marie Carroll will now go on to represent Ireland at the European Parliment in Strasbourg on December 5th on International Volunteer Day
to compete for the prestigious European Award for Voluntary Contribution alongside candidates from across Europe.
Marie was nominated in two categories, Health & Disability, and Sport & Recreation for her work with Bayside Gymnastics which she founded over 20 years ago.

Bayside Gymnastics prides itself on its integrated programme -GymAbility™  where those with a disability participate alongside their non-disabled partner in the true spirit of “respect among equals”.

The programme originally began over thirty years ago for young people in the local community. About 20 years ago, Marie and her team at Bayside Gym Club opened their doors to include young people with disabilities.

The spirit of the gym, fostered by and through Marie, is one of inclusion. Every level of ability is catered for, and at a pace to suit every individual. Its not the winning that counts, but the taking part, and for Marie the achievement is in seeing every gymnast participating at his or her own level of ability.

The motivation, perseverance, (gentle) discipline, social interaction and self esteem that Marie instils in our young people carry far beyond the four walls of the gym hall. These skills are of major benefit to the gymnasts in everyday life. It has given many of the young gymnasts a ready social circle, a group of friends, and an interest in common, which they might not have acquired anywhere else.

She solves challenges by looking at them from the gymnasts point of view, and never by trying to make gymnasts conform to the 'easy option' of what suits the coaches!

To quote the Club motto: "Attitude is everything!" Marie has the ability to surround herself with likeminded volunteers, and their enthusiasm, commitment, and sheer dedication to all the gymnasts is what makes Bayside Gym so special.

She makes a difference, not only to the gymnasts, but to their families too.She brings out hidden gifts in others as well as bringing joy and dedication to all she does
